Types of denture

A full denture is made for an edentulous jaw and takes its retention from the palate and ridge. A partial denture is for patients with some remaining teeth and clasps onto them; metal-framework partials are thinner and more durable.

Precision-attachment dentures remove the visible clasps: retention comes from a concealed mechanism inside a crown, which is the most comfortable removable option aesthetically. Implant-supported overdentures take retention from implants and eliminate slipping altogether.

The adaptation period

The first fortnight with a new denture is hard, and that is unavoidable. The tongue and cheeks are learning a new volume, salivation increases, and some sounds are difficult. Reading aloud speeds up speech adaptation, so we suggest it.

Pressure sores are normal and are corrected by adjustment, which is why a review is scheduled for the week after fitting. Do not simply leave the denture out because it hurts — wear it for at least a few hours before the appointment so the sore spot can be located.

Common questions

Several options. The ridge resorbs over time and the denture loosens; a reline readapts the fitting surface and resolves most cases. For a lasting answer, two to four implants with stud attachments is the most effective route — the denture still comes out, but it does not move.

Largely, in time — but start gradually. Soft food for the first days, then foods of moderate resistance. Rather than biting into hard items like apples with the front teeth, slice them and chew on the sides; that keeps the denture stable.

Yes, it is advised. Leaving it out overnight in clean water lets the tissue recover and guards against denture stomatitis. Do not store it dry — acrylic can distort. If you clench, mention it, as a different plan may be needed.

Yes — an immediate denture is prepared beforehand and fitted as soon as the teeth are removed, so you are never without teeth. Because the bone reshapes during healing, a reline or remake is needed after three to six months, and we plan for that from the outset.
