Assessment before treatment

Not every lesion is suitable. Suspicious moles — asymmetric, irregularly bordered, changing colour or growing — are not destroyed by freezing; diagnosis comes first and a dermatological assessment is needed. We do not treat suspicious lesions here; we refer them.

Suitable lesions include small benign-appearing moles, skin tags, superficial warts, sun spots and seborrhoeic keratoses. For those the procedure takes seconds and is usually complete in one session.

Procedure and healing

There is a brief stinging sensation during treatment, and most patients need no anaesthetic. After freezing the lesion reddens, then darkens and crusts. The crust separates on its own within seven to ten days.

The key rule is not to pick the crust — removing it early raises the risk of scarring. After healing the area can stay lighter than the surrounding skin for a while, and this usually evens out over a few months. Sun protection is essential during that period.

Common questions

Superficial lesions usually heal without a scar. Two things raise the risk: picking the crust early and sun exposure during healing. When those two rules are followed the result is satisfactory for most patients. Deeper lesions can leave a slight difference in colour.

There is a sharp cold-burning sensation for a few seconds, then it passes. Most patients need no anaesthetic. Numbing cream can be used on sensitive areas or where there are many lesions.

For small, superficial lesions usually yes. Thicker warts and deeper lesions can need a second application two to three weeks later. We decide by looking at how healing has progressed after the first.

Asymmetry, an irregular border, more than one colour, a diameter over six millimetres and change over time — if any of these is present, assessment must come first. Such lesions are not frozen; destroying a lesion before it is diagnosed is not appropriate. If you are unsure, come in and we decide together.
