What the design follows

The reference is the face, not the teeth. The pupil line, facial midline, lip dynamics and how much gum shows when you smile are all measured. The length of the upper incisors is derived from video recorded while you speak and smile — a still photograph cannot supply that.

Tooth form comes next. Square, oval and triangular forms sit differently on different faces, and the "same white rectangle for everyone" approach is the commonest cause of an artificial look. Characterisation — slight asymmetry, natural incisal texture — is deliberately built into the design.

The mock-up: a reversible stage

Once the design is approved, temporary composite is applied in the mouth using a silicone key. The mock-up can stay in place for a few days: you speak with it, eat with it, photograph it and show it to your family.

At this stage no tooth has been touched. If the length feels long it is shortened; if the form is not liked it is changed; if you want it "a bit more natural" it is redesigned. Permanent work begins only once you approve — no surprises.

Common questions

It gets changed. That is precisely why the mock-up stage exists: the temporary material is removed, the design revised and trialled again. As many revisions as you need can happen before any permanent work begins.

No. The design is a plan; the means of delivering it depends on the case. Some smiles are resolved with whitening and a gingival correction alone, others with composite bonding, others with orthodontics. Veneers are only one of the options.

Usually yes, depending on the cause: excess gum tissue is contoured with gingivectomy, a hypermobile upper lip can be limited with botox, and a skeletal cause calls for orthodontics or surgery. The design stage is where we establish which one applies.

Yes. We do a preliminary assessment from the photographs you send and discuss what is realistic on a video consultation. The definitive plan and timeline are settled after the scan and examination at the clinic, but we can tell you in advance how many days to allow.
